ABOUT FELA KUTI

The iconic Nigerian musician Fela Kuti aka Fela Anikulapo Kuti (15 October1938 - 2 August 1997) belongs to the very small group of people in history who have created music genres instantly identifiable with their names.

He pioneered Afrobeat, a fantastic fusion of West African rhythms with elements of jazz and funk, and used its pulsating polyrhythmic beats as the ideal platform for delivering dynamic political, social, cultural and philosophical messages.

Fela Kuti persistently railed against the corruption, oppression, social injustice and human rights abuses perpetrated by Nigerian governments, Army and Police. He vigorously attacked colonialism, neocolonialism and the South African apartheid political system. He also championed Pan-African ideals of pride, unity, development and progress.

Fela actively encouraged a deep understanding of African history, cultural teachings and traditional beliefs and constantly gave full voice to his observations of human behaviour.

While he is most famous for his political activism, nearly 60% of his songs deal with social, cultural and philosophical issues.

His highly courageous political and social activism earned him widespread admiration in Nigeria, Africa and beyond but also resulted in strong opposition from the Nigerian military and political leaders. Their extreme sensitivity to his constant criticisms led to repeated brutal physical assaults and imprisonments. These did not deter him but, instead, significantly enhanced his popularity at home and also elevated him to global legend status.

During his prolific career, Fela Kuti composed and recorded more than 100 songs and led four fabulous group formations, the Koola Lobitos, Nigeria 70, Africa 70 and Egypt 80. He featured powerfully on vocals, trumpet, saxophone and keyboards and enjoyed superb collaboration from many outstanding musicians including the great drum maestro Tony Allen and the supreme saxophonist Igo Chico. The powerful musical understanding the two of them had with Fela was pivotal in establishing the strong afrobeat sound signature from the very beginning.

The energy of Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat is easily tuned into by people all over the world. They identify with his musical messages because they deal with universal behaviours of human beings. Their connection with the powerful rhythms is a natural phenomenon. All humans react to rhythm.

He remains an iconic figure and the love for his music continues to spread globally with Afrobeat groups being formed in many countries around the world.

Fela Kuti had a lot to say and he said it all with deep conviction and without fear or compromise. He was a true rhythm messenger.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

One day as a 12 year old schoolboy in Ibadan, Nigeria, I was walking past a record store when I became totally transfixed by the mesmerising sounds blasting into the atmosphere. I had never heard anything so dynamic, intense and powerful before and went in to find out what was playing. It was the music of Fela Kuti.

That moment was the beginning of a lifelong passion for the supreme and unique rhythms of Fela’s Afrobeat. Now, decades later and in possession of nearly every vinyl recording of his, the music is still as fresh and stunning to my ears as it was then. It is a joy to hear every time.

In various guises as a mental health medical doctor in the UK National Health Service, an avid collector of music from different cultures, occasional dj and a world music concert promoter at the Royal Festival and Queen Elizabeth Halls in London, music has always played a central role in the journey.

Whether immersed in its energy on my own, enjoying it with friends or promoting great musicians such as the legendary South African Miriam Makeba, Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain, Algerian rai music queen Cheikha Rimitti, Iranian classical music diva Parisa and flamenco guitar genius Vicente Amigo, music is always close by.

Fela Kuti's rhythms and sounds have played an integral part in the journey of life.
